Infosys lets go off 240 more trainees who failed tests, offers free upskilling

Infosys Lays Off 240 Entry-Level Employees After Failed Assessments

Software giant Infosys has reportedly let go of 240 entry-level employees after they failed to pass internal assessments. The news, confirmed by company emails reviewed by Moneycontrol on April 18th, marks another round of terminations for the Indian IT services firm.

This follows a similar incident in February, where over 300 trainees were let go for failing assessment tests.

Details of the Termination

The email sent on April 18th explained the situation to the affected employees: “Further to the announcement of the results of your final assessment attempt, please be informed that you have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program.”

But it’s not all bad news. Infosys is offering those affected a helping hand.

Upskilling Opportunities and Outplacement Services

Infosys is providing affected employees with professional outplacement services to aid in their job search. More interestingly, they are offering alternative career paths via Infosys-sponsored external training programs. Options include:

  • Training to prepare for potential roles in the BPM industry. Successful completion could lead to opportunities at Infosys BPM Limited.
  • Training program on Information Technology fundamentals to support their IT career journey.

In addition to training, the company will provide one month of pay, accommodation, and a travel allowance from the training centre in Mysuru to Bengaluru or their hometown.

Partnerships for Training

Infosys has partnered with UpGrad for BPM training and NIIT for IT training. Notably, Infosys has extended this offer to the trainees impacted in February, allowing them to enroll in these upskilling courses free of charge.

Behind the Layoffs: A Subdued Demand Environment

These layoffs arrive as Infosys navigates a challenging economic landscape. The company has projected a modest revenue growth of just 0 percent to 3 percent for the current fiscal year, which reflects the ongoing uncertainty in its core markets.

The Timeline

On April 17, 2025, around 730 trainees from the batch that joined on October 21, 2024, took their third and final attempt at the assessments.

Results for the next batch of trainees, who are also due for their third attempt, are expected the following week.

Earlier Reductions

Back on March 26th, Infosys let go of another 30-45 trainees from its Mysuru campus for failing internal assessments. These trainees were offered similar career alternatives, including a 12-week training program for roles within Infosys Business Process Management (BPM).

These trainees had been waiting for two and a half years to be onboarded, a delay caused by a macroeconomic slowdown that prompted clients to cut back on project spending.

They were initially recruited as System Engineers (SE) and Digital Specialist Engineers (DSE).

Infosys’s Fresher Hiring Plans

Despite these layoffs, Infosys maintains its commitment to onboarding fresh talent. The company stated on April 17th that it plans to onboard 20,000 freshers this fiscal year, even amidst the uncertainty in key markets like the US and Europe. Last year, they onboarded over 15,000 freshers.

The Context

The current batch undergoing assessments completed their engineering degrees during the height of the Covid pandemic when physical classes were suspended, and many were hired through virtual interviews.
