WhatsApp down in India: Users are reporting issues with messages, calls and more

WhatsApp Faces Partial Outage: Users Report Messaging Issues

WhatsApp is experiencing a partial disruption, with users across India, the US, and other regions reporting problems sending messages and using the app. The issues began surfacing late in the evening of April 13th.

Hundreds of WhatsApp users globally are encountering service interruptions on the popular messaging platform.

Spike in Outage Reports

Data from Downdetector’s US and India websites shows a significant surge in outage reports around 7:40 PM IST. Reports peaked at 628 in the US and 655 in India, indicating a widespread issue.

The most frequently reported problem is the inability to send messages, followed by app-related errors and failures in receiving messages.

Breakdown of Reported Issues:

According to Downdetector:

  • 89% of users in both regions reported problems with sending messages.
  • 8-9% faced app-related issues.
  • 2-3% had trouble receiving messages or using the voice call feature.

The surge in complaints suggests a broad partial outage, though seemingly not as extensive as previous disruptions involving other Meta platforms.

Users Take to Social Media to Complain

Frustrated users have turned to X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences and seek assistance. Many are reporting an inability to load chats or send texts, especially on iPhones.

One user wrote, “@pppwad @wa_status WhatsApp on iPhone not working in India,” while another complained about chat freezing and glitching on iOS devices.

Longer-Term Issues Exacerbated

Some users are highlighting pre-existing issues that may have been made worse by the current outage. User @M_N_NSR mentioned persistent problems with transferring and restoring backups, adding that technical support hasn’t been able to resolve the problem.

Current Status and What’s Next

As of 8:00 PM IST, WhatsApp services remain partially disrupted. The issue appears to be affecting message delivery and app stability more than login or server connection.

Downdetector’s outage graphs continue to show elevated complaint levels above the baseline average of 2.

WhatsApp has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the problem or an estimated time for resolution. Users are advised to monitor official WhatsApp social media channels for updates and to consider using alternative communication platforms if needed.

Update: April 13 afternoon, WhatsApp appears to be working fine for most users.
